The PACE Plan

Plan for the day it breaks

PACE stands for Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency: four ways of getting the same job done, in the order you will reach for them. I use it for everything from documentation to AI to the lab network, because things fail, and the plan should already exist before they do.

How it works

The four layers

P

Primary

The way you intend to do it. The normal path, tuned and watched.

A

Alternate

A different way that works when the primary does not. Ready to take over without a scramble.

C

Contingency

What you do when the first two are gone. Slower or rougher, but still moving.

E

Emergency

The last resort that works even when everything else is dark: a person and a book.

Examples

P: the local network. A: a cloud fallback. C: a VPN mesh. E: out-of-band management.

CONTINUITY

Procedures

P: digital procedures. A: printed copies for when the network is down. C: an offsite backup. E: a trusted person who knows.
